Barbara Gittings (1932-2007), founder of the New York City chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis who also pushed for the American Psychological Association to clear away homosexuality from its checklist of mental ailments in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).
