In 1960, Mailer wrote "Superman Comes to the Supermarket" for Esquire journal, an account of the emergence of John F. Kennedy throughout the Democratic Party convention. The essay was an important breakthrough for the New Journalism of the sixties, but when the magazine's editors improved the title to "Superman Comes to the Supermart", Mailer was enraged, and would not create for Esquire for years.
