Religious progressives sought common floor between the Christian religion and the new science and increased criticism. Many blended their religion with the Social Gospel-a postmillennialism drained of the miraculous, with social reform taking the position of the Second Coming. This standard pessimism about the direction of culture was reflected in a change away from postmillennialism and toward premillennialism.
