It’s obvious from Finnegan’s rueful retelling of his young days all that he endured owing to the daily life he chose: He ordeals terror and soreness on the waves he punishes his entire body with scrapes, a damaged nose, torn ankle cartilage, solar-caused cataracts relationships with good friends and relatives pale future to the lifetime of a "latter-working day barbarian" who rejects the values of duty.
