According to Kenneth W. Goings, PhD, no copy of the Memphis Free Speech survives. The monument is adjacent to the historic Beale Street Baptist Church, in which Wells developed the Free Speech newspaper. She acknowledged an editorial position for a tiny Memphis journal, the Evening Star, and she commenced writing weekly articles for The Living Way newspaper less than the pen name "Iola".
