HBO acquired the tv legal rights to the novels, with Benioff and Weiss as the series' government producers and Martin as a co-executive producer. Before getting approached by Benioff and Weiss, Martin had experienced meetings with other scriptwriters, most of whom wanted to adapt the collection as a function movie.
