People who assert Assange was "hiding from rape charges" are automatically implicitly creating two transparently absurd claims: 1, that Assange had no explanation to concern US extradition, and two, that Ecuador was lying about its formal reasons for granting him asylum - that in actuality the Correa government was just in the organization of defending men and women from rape prices for some odd cause.
