The Church of the East experienced, like other churches, an ordained clergy in the three classic orders of bishop, priest (or presbyter), and deacon. Also like other church buildings, it experienced an episcopal polity: organisation by dioceses, each individual headed by a bishop and made up of a number of individual parish communities overseen by monks.
