It makes perception when you glimpse at a map and see what's in between Central Europe and the Near East. The genetic landscape in the Near East had additional affinity to Neolithic Europe than the existing populations do. Ashkenazim form a genetic cluster with Southern Italians and Greeks, suggesting that they intermixed with Southern European populations before migrating to Germany, then Eastern Europe.
