The patent was filed in 1998 and granted in February 2001, but arrived to developers' interest late past month when lawyers for Maz Technologies, the patent holder, contacted software program firms Pc Dynamics and Envoy Data and asked for licensing service fees for what Maz thinks is unauthorized use of its encryption engineering.
