Within five years after Cook's arrival, European military services know-how helped Kamehameha I, ruler of the island of Hawaii, conquer and unify the islands for the very first time, developing the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1795. The kingdom was affluent and important for its agriculture and strategic spot in the Pacific.
