It was the initial world further than Earth visited by a spacecraft (Venera 1 in 1961) and the first to be efficiently landed on (by Venera seven in 1970). The planet's thick clouds render observation of its area unachievable in the seen spectrum, and the very first in-depth maps did not arise until eventually the arrival of the Magellan orbiter in 1991.
