These locations maintain the Buddhist canon, the Tripiṭaka (the "3 Baskets"), in the Pâli language. The Buddhist canon as it arrived in China was in Sanskrit, and it provided many special Mahâyâna Sûtras that are not in the Pâli Canon (although some are now suspected of staying Chinese forgeries).
