It works by using a non-gamma transfer purpose (PQ or HLG) and method colorimetry (chromaticity of coloration primaries and white position) equivalent to Rec. One starts off with a white substrate (canvas, page, and so on.), and works by using ink to subtract colour from white to make an image. CIELAB makes a colour room that is a lot more perceptually linear than other colour spaces.
