The reign of Julian, who below the affect of his adviser Mardonius attempted to restore Classical Roman and Hellenistic religion, only briefly interrupted the succession of Christian emperors. In 303 he and Galerius commenced the persecution and ordered the destruction of all the Christian churches and scripts and forbade Christian worship. His reign ended the regular form of imperial rule, the Principate (from princeps) and began the Tetrarchy.
