Following generation on The Phantom Menace, Portman in the beginning turned down a direct role in the coming-of-age movie Anywhere but Here (1999) just after discovering it would entail a sexual intercourse scene, but the director Wayne Wang and actress Susan Sarandon (who performed Portman's mother in the film) demanded a rewrite of the script.
