As the Imperial Government experienced dominated that the AME Church could function in the United Kingdom, the initial AME church in Bermuda was erected in 1885 in Hamilton Parish, on the shore of Harrington Sound, and titled St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church (the congregation had started earlier as component of the British Methodist Episcopal Church of Canada).
