Grandin grew to become very well-regarded outside of the American autistic community, immediately after staying described by Oliver Sacks in the title narrative of his reserve An Anthropologist on Mars (1995), for which he gained a Polk Award. It was a unique historical second: the only time an American president has at any time summoned the family of a CIA officer who died violently and apologised on behalf of the US government.
