The vast majority of the 300,000 travel visas granted in 2003 were being received by Asian Muslims, who presumably meant to pay a visit to pilgrimage sites in Mashhad and Qom. The Tehran-Bandar-Abbas railroad, opened in 1995, connects Bandar-Abbas to the railroad method of Central Asia by means of Tehran and Mashhad.
