In 1613, Spelman was the interpreter when Chief Japazaws served Argall abduct Pocahontas, which at some point led to her relationship to John Rolfe and a short-term peace with Powhatan. Despite Spelman's continued operate as an interpreter for English colonists, mixing with both of those colonial and Powhatan leaders, Spelman hardly ever wrote about obtaining any involvement in the abduction.
