There is a curious, oft times transcendent harmony to the dissonance at the heart of Love & Mercy. That Liu shoots these scenes-particularly the film’s opening, established to a stirring classical score-with so much levity and attractiveness, with so a great deal kinetic liberty, only assures that, for as much as Crystal Moselle and Jonah Hill adore their topics, Liu lives with them.
