In a 9-one-one phone designed shortly after the shooting started, Mateen swore allegiance to the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and mentioned the U.S. In reaction, Mateen withdrew again into the nightclub and continued capturing victims as he traversed via the building, occasionally firing into bodies without the need of checking regardless of whether or not they had been presently dead.
