Although nineteenth-century legislation sooner or later outlawed the publication, retail, and trafficking of specified writings and images regarded as pornographic and would order the destruction of shop and warehouse stock intended for sale, the non-public possession of and viewing of (some forms of) pornography was not designed an offence till the twentieth century. Both sorts of pornography commonly comprise nudity.
