The Christmas ceremony dates to a period prior to the American Revolutionary War, but lapsed just before currently being revived by President Nicholas Murray Butler in 1910. A troop of pupils dressed as Continental Army troopers have the eponymous log from the sundial to the lounge of John Jay Hall, where it is lit amid the singing of seasonal carols.
