This image turned well known in the United States and Canada in the 19th century thanks to the sizeable affect of the 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas". Nicholas was regarded for his generous presents to the bad, in unique presenting the three impoverished daughters of a pious Christian with dowries so that they would not have to develop into prostitutes.
