In 2005, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, who started the Jewish Renewal movement, created a pilgrimage to Ukraine to the grave of the Baal Shem Tov, who started Hasidism. Reb Zalman felt a kinship with the Baal Shem Tov, which usually means grasp of the good identify, mainly because, like Zalman, he’d diverged from the dominant Jewish tradition of his time.
