The passes trough the Pamirs are so superior, that acquainted pack animals like horses and mules would simply just die from the altitude. This conversion was effected by Mahinda and his sister Sanghamitta, youngsters of the Maurya Emperor Aśoka, who are intended to have flown to Ceylon on their mission.
