Ohio and other instances, the United States Supreme Court ruled that only "hardcore" pornography could be prohibited by obscenity guidelines, with the rest protected by the First Amendment. A distinction concerning "hardcore pornography" and "borderline pornography" (or "borderline obscenity") was created in the nineteen fifties and nineteen sixties by American jurists speaking about obscenity laws.
