McDonald was having difficulties with melancholy and divorce when creating the movie Brain Candy (ironically about a drug that can make people today happy). His father was a drug addict who was inevitably disowned just after he stole from Ray's faculty fund (which was developed with the support of his grandparents) to obtain drugs.
