Beginning in the early 19th century, pin-up modeling experienced "theatrical origins" burlesque performers and actresses occasionally applied photographic ad as business cards to advertise reveals. Pin-up styles ended up variously glamour types, vogue versions, or actresses whose images were supposed for casual display screen, i.e. meant to be "pinned-up" on a wall, which is the foundation for the etymology of the phrase.
