His essay initiated what Dan Wakefield, in his memoir of New York in the nineteen fifties, called "the Great Orgasm Debate", which raged "not only in the pages of Dissent but in beds all in excess of New York". In a subsequent difficulty of Dissent the writer Ned Polsky argued that hipsters were being "so narcissistic that inevitably their orgasms are untimely and puny".
