The Clovis culture, which appeared about 11,000 BC, is believed to symbolize the initial wave of human settlement of the Americas. The first acknowledged use of the title "America" dates to 1507, when it appeared on a world map produced by the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller in the French metropolis of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges.
