Currently, the U.S., as a purchaser of prescription drugs, negotiates some drug selling prices but is forbidden by law from negotiating drug prices for the Medicare program owing to the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act handed in 2003. Democrats have billed that the intent of this provision is just to allow for the pharmaceutical industry to profiteer off of the Medicare software.
