It is the 2nd most populous city in the Central-West Region, only surpassed by the country's money Brasília, found about two hundred kilometers (120 miles) from Goiânia. At the centre of the town is the Marienplatz - a huge open square named following the Mariensäule, a Marian column in its centre - with the Old and the New Town Hall.
