There was even an episode based about how a single dude reacted to Xena's leather-based outfit (and how upset it built his girlfriend). Xena considers switching to chainmail, but Gabrielle points out this would most likely only entice a kinkier kind of person. Xena was quite acrobatic if she wore actual hefty body armor it would very likely have limited her means to move.
