Within the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Family Code states that the husband is the head of the household; the wife owes her obedience to her husband; a spouse has to reside together with her husband wherever he chooses to reside; and wives will need to have their husbands' authorization to deliver a case in courtroom or provoke different legal proceedings. In Iraq, the legislation permits husbands to legally "punish" their wives.
