In October, the South Carolina legislature voted to call a convention to nullify the tariffs. On March 28, 1834, Calhoun voted with the Whig senators on a successful movement to censure Jackson for his elimination of the money. Calhoun occasionally affiliated with the Whigs, but selected to stay a virtual impartial owing to the Whig marketing of federally backed "inner improvements".
