This stage was raised in The Illustrated London News on thirteen February 1847: "There was no law it would not pass at their ask for, and no abuse it would not protect for them." On 24 March, The Times described that Britain experienced permitted in Ireland "a mass of poverty, disaffection, and degradation without the need of a parallel in the world. It allowed proprietors to suck the pretty everyday living-blood of that wretched race".
